Mongddang Irvine
MongddagIrvine was designed with the goal of creating a "Trust-based used goods direct transaction marketplace and local community hub" for the Korean community in Irvine.
1. Initial Planning Phase (Background & Intent)
While analyzing the success factors of Korea's 'Karrot Market' (Danggeun Market), the core of the initial planning was to perfectly localize it for the US environment—specifically targeting Zelle payments, strict privacy, car-based local pickups, and the strong demand for school districts and moving sales.
The 3 Core Principles established during the initial planning phase are:
Privacy-First: Completely block the exposure of external contact information like phone numbers or KakaoTalk IDs. All transactions and negotiations are handled exclusively through an in-app 1:1 real-time chat. (Implemented automatic personal info masking system)
Zero-PG On-site Deal: No Payment Gateway (PG) integration. Transactions are settled on-site after inspecting the item using Cash or Zelle. This completely eliminates credit card fees and US tax (IRS 1099-K) risks.
Mobile-First & Universal Hybrid: Optimize all UI/UX for mobile touch environments (Sleek Interface) and support both iOS and Android apps simultaneously using a single web codebase.
2. Project Goals and Development Process
🎯 Current Goals
Build a GPS-based neighborhood verification system so residents across ~20 Irvine villages can trade safely.
Complete the in-app real-time chat and price negotiation widget, optimized for Zelle payments and offline meetups.
Implement core community-driven modules such as the Manner Temperature system, Free Share feed, and local info boards (school districts, hospitals, restaurants).
🛠 Development Progress
Google AI Studio Code Integration: Advancing the initial prototype code through Vibe Coding based on Google Antigravity.
Frontend & Mobile UI Construction: Componentizing mobile PWA-optimized layouts (
MobileHeader,MobileBottomNav,TradeFeed, etc.) using Next.js and Tailwind CSS.Authentication & Backend Integration: Implemented Social Login (Apple/Google) via Supabase Auth and designed Irvine local verification (Geofencing) logic based on HTML5 Geolocation API.
Database Design: Completed database schemas and Row Level Security (RLS) policies for user profiles, product listings, 1:1 chat rooms/messages, and manner evaluations (Reviews) using Supabase.
AI Feature Preparation: Laying the groundwork for the 'Mongi' AI Voice Search and smart filtering features using the Gemini API (
@google/genai).

4. Future Goals and Business Model Roadmap
After securing traffic as a 100% free local community platform, the plan is to gradually expand into locally optimized business models.
Phase 1 (Current ~ Initial Launch): Traffic Lock-in
Secure the Irvine Korean user base by operating core services (used trades, community, room rentals/subleases) 100% free of charge.
Launch the Mobile Web and iOS App Store first, followed by the Android Play Store (fulfilling the 14-day/20-tester requirement).
Phase 2: Owner Direct Commerce & Group Buying
Utilize platform traffic to conduct pre-order-based local pickup group buying (K-food specialties, seasonal fruits, daily necessities like shower filters).
Phase 3: Local Business B2B Sponsorship
Introduce targeted banner ads and push notification sponsorships for local Irvine businesses (dentists, academies, real estate, etc.).
Operate a locally specialized revenue model where settlements are made directly with the operator (via Zelle) to bypass in-app purchase fees (30%).
