The Sanctuary of 'Kim Eo-jun’s Thought': Arrogance Swallowing Korea’s Public Sphere

Once a symbol of satire, Kim Eo-jun has evolved into a power-wielding 'shamanic prophet,' deepening the philosophical poverty and confirmation bias in Korean political discourse.
When 'Ddanzi Ilbo' first emerged, the public cheered. Kim Eo-jun’s signature satire and humor, which mocked the solemnity of established media, resembled the subversive energy of traditional Korean Madang-nori (folk theater). In a media landscape dominated by conservative voices, his directness was a refreshing act of resistance. However, as of March 2026, the phrase “This is Kim Eo-jun’s thought” is no longer satire. It has become the proclamation of a sanctuary that refuses any critique—a manifestation of arrogance rooted in shamanistic conviction.
Kim’s diagnoses rely more on 'inspiration' than rational inference. When facts contradict his hypotheses, he subtly twists them into conspiracy theories. This mirrors a village shaman who, refusing to admit their fading spiritual power, blames bad luck or impurity for a failed ritual. Instead of deep historical insight or firm political philosophy, his leadership of a fandom while wearing a 'progressive' cloak for situational convenience symbolizes the qualitative degradation of today’s public sphere.
This phenomenon is not limited to a specific camp. The state of conservative commentators on YouTube is equally lamentable. For them, politics is not the realization of philosophy but a 'business of hate.' As an ironic business model that generates profit by designating enemies and inciting hatred has taken root, in-depth analysis has vanished, replaced by provocative, spliced information. Whether progressive or conservative, finding 'depth of thought' among self-proclaimed pundits is as difficult as finding water in a desert.
Ultimately, the current situation is a tragedy caused by the poverty of philosophy and the absence of ideology. From a folkloric perspective, a healthy community needs a process of 'puri' (resolution/unraveling) to alleviate conflict. However, today’s commentators, far from resolving conflicts, are intent on casting 'sal' (deadly curses) upon one another. In a reality where discourse on the nation’s future has devolved into game-like predictions or mere moneymaking tools, the public’s emotional exhaustion has reached its peak.
An era of lightweight discourse is dangerous. A public sphere overflowing with diagnosis without insight and claims without responsibility devastates the soil of democracy. As long as Kim Eo-jun’s 'feeling-based' commentary and the conservative YouTube 'hate business' coexist, restoring the dignity of Korean politics remains a distant dream. What we face is not merely political confrontation, but a massive regression born of intellectual laziness.
